Which sale has the biggest furniture discounts?
Boxing Day is, without question, the best sale period for most furniture. Although Black Friday has evolved into the largest online sale period in Australia, it originated from fashion and electronics. Some furniture stores participate in it, although their biggest clear-out happens later.
There isn't one hierarchy of sales that everyone recognises. What really determines the discount value isn't the type of sale itself, but how badly a retailer needs to sell its stock.
Boxing Day (from 26 December)
Boxing Day is about making space for new products by clearing any unsold items after Christmas. This year, Boxing Day lands on Saturday 26 December, and many sales continue until the stocktake at the end of January. Look forward to lots of floor stock and end-of-line products, among other things. Read more about what we did in last year’s Half Price Furniture Boxing Day Sale round-up.
Black Friday (late November)
As far as furniture goes, however, Black Friday comes after Boxing Day. There isn't the same warehouse clearance going on that will occur after Christmas time, but Black Friday has its advantage in being able to purchase a suite before Christmas time and still be able to have it delivered before then.
Christmas (December)
Christmas falls on Friday 25 December. Christmas offers run through December, but delivery slots during the holidays are booked quickly, so order early if you want a piece in place for Christmas hosting.
Black Friday furniture deals: what's worth buying
When Black Friday 2026 starts and ends
Black Friday is celebrated on the last Friday of November, following the day of the American holiday of Thanksgiving. The schedule of sales may look like this:
-
Middle of November: appearance of early deals and promotions in newsletters
-
Monday, 23 November: beginning of Black Friday Week
-
Friday, 27 November: Black Friday
It would be wise to place your order in Black Friday week if you want it by Christmas. To get an idea of how things will go, check out last year's Black Friday deals on furniture.
What to buy on Black Friday and what to wait for

Cooper Deep Seating Lounge with Ottoman
Purchase on Black Friday if you require the item prior to Christmas: a lounge for entertaining, a sofa bed for visiting relatives, a new mattress, or a complete bedroom suite. You will save a little bit more by waiting until Boxing Day; however, you will have to do without it throughout the holiday season, as the most demand in colours and sizes usually sell out first.
Wait if you are flexible regarding the design of the item and are willing to accept end-of-line or display items, which are generally in greatest supply on Boxing Day.
Since Half Price Furniture is already selling products at a 50% discount every day, our Black November promotions offer even more savings than everyday prices.
How to tell if a sale price is real
A high price marked "was" can be relevant only if that product was sold at such a price for a reasonable period of time prior to the offer being made. In Australia, the consumer protection body has fined companies that have offered savings from prices that were never charged or were charged for a short period of time.
The simplest solution: when you see something you want to buy in October, take a screen shot of its price. Then check the price on the offer day. An actual discount will be the one that is lower than what you paid for it last month.
What we recommend is to select your preferred furniture online and then to verify it personally if you can, particularly for lounges and mattresses, since comfort is more important than appearance. Compare always the total cost of delivery rather than the sticker price only. In case you are hesitating between the two, read our guide on shopping for furniture stores and online stores.

How to get the best price in any sale
-
Take measurements of your room, doors, hallways, and staircases
-
Take a screenshot of the pricing a few weeks before the sale
-
Join the Half Price Furniture newsletter for early access to VIP sales
-
Ask about floor models and displays in the showroom
-
Look at the delivered price and not the ticket price
-
Check the warranty and return policy before purchase
When it's not worth waiting for a sale
If your existing mattress is giving you back pain, or if you are moving to a new house which happens to be an empty one next month, then saving two months to save a bit isn't worth it.
The available items during a sale are also limited. Popular items sell out quickly. Most common colours sell out. Delivery slots during holidays are booked quickly. When you find something that you like and is priced well for your liking, purchasing now might be better than betting on December.
This is the reason why Half Price Furniture maintains low pricing throughout the year.
FAQs
Which sale has the biggest furniture discounts?
The biggest furniture sale in Australia is Boxing Day in December. Black Friday also is one of the closest holidays to the top of the list, especially online.
Do online prices differ from in-store?
While in many cases, the ticket price for online and in-store purchases is the same, the totals may vary. With online shopping, there is always a delivery cost, whereas at showrooms you may take advantage of floor-stock pricing as well as pick it up yourself.
When is Black Friday in Australia?
Black Friday falls on Friday, 27th November. Most retailers offer deals during the week of Black Friday starting from Monday, 23rd November.
Is Boxing Day or Black Friday better for furniture?
There is likely to be more excess stock available on Boxing Day, while Black Friday is the last real chance to receive anything before Christmas. Purchase on Black Friday if it needs to arrive before Christmas, but there may be greater savings by waiting for Boxing Day.
