Affordable Corner and Modular Sofas Under $2,000: What You Actually Get

Affordable Corner and Modular Sofas Under $2,000: What You Actually Get

Contemporary grey three-seat sofa displayed in a furniture showroom, showcasing an affordable modern seating option.

The corner couch is normally the largest furniture item in a living room and often the most fought-over item during movie time. The positive side to buying a budget corner sofa under $2000 is that it is possible and seats your entire family comfortably. The downside is knowing where the money has been saved and living with it.

This article reveals what is available in the market today, what goes into making a sofa of this price, what makes the price of modular furniture fluctuate widely, and how soon a budget sofa can be delivered to a Sydney living room. We are Half Price Furniture; therefore, this article is not only revealing the facts but also telling the truth about a lounge of this price range.

The short answer: what $2,000 buys in a corner sofa

Hasting Corner Lounge

For less than $2,000, you can acquire a five-seat fabric corner sofa with a wooden frame and spring base, or a similar chaise sofa-bed at a much lower price. The item which you won’t be able to obtain at this price is a leather corner or an electric recliner with a large modular set within the same corner sofa, because these options make the price rise to $2,200-$ 3,000. What you get, and what you give up, at this price

Where the money goes: frame, springs and cushions

Components that will determine whether your sofa will survive for three or ten years are not visible on pictures.

  • Frame: It should be made of solid wood or high-quality plywood to verify the proper durability of screws and joints. Particleboard will cost less but will get loose easily.

  • Suspension: S springs and pocket coil springs retain their shape for a long time, whereas webbing is affordable and might sag. Many great sofas combine the former ones with the latter in different areas of a sofa.

  • Cushions: High-density foam retains its shape better. Feathers combined with foam provide a more comfortable sitting but will require fluffing. All new sofas have a break-in period, which takes about one month.

Where it is saved: fabric, mechanisms and number of pieces

For under $2,000, the savings are generally:

  • Material instead of leather: Polyester or performance material will be affordable, easier to clean, and suitable for families with children and pets.

  • Fewer mechanical parts: Fixed corners are more affordable than electric recliners, which involve additional parts such as motors and wiring that might malfunction.

  • Fewer components: Three-piece corners are more affordable to manufacture and ship than six-piece modulaires.

  • Clearance stock: Our Clearance Sale has the lowest prices, but the standard warranty may not apply to clearance items, so always check the terms with the store first.

What to expect after a year

A high-quality sofa will also be subject to some wear and tear. The company does not give any warranty for natural wear and tear, which includes pilling and fading, and other effects of weathering, including sun, stains, and improper cleaning. Impressions less than 32 mm also are not covered under warranty.

Fabric or leather under $2,000?

Soronto 3-Seater Leather Lounge with Timber Frame & Legs – Half Price Furniture

For most families, fabric will be the preferred choice below the $2,000 mark since leather is pricier, and hence it will increase the cost considerably. Below the $2,000 mark, leather couches will mostly be straight sofas and recliners, while leather corners are priced from around $2,250. Additionally, fabric tends to be softer and warmer, while high-quality performance fabric stands up to wear and tear of family life well. On the other hand, leather is easy to clean and ideal for pet owners. The disadvantage of leather is that it is more expensive per seat compared to fabric. If easy cleaning is a priority and if you can afford it, then go for leather.

Why do modular sofa prices vary so much

Two modular sofas can appear identical in pictures but have a price difference of $1,000. The following are examples from our Excaliber range:

Lounge

What changes?

Price

Excaliber Chaise Recliner Lounge

Chaise lounge with a recliner

From $1,799

Excaliber Modular Lounge with Manual Recliners

More modules and manual recliners

From $2,499

Ex-Calibre Fabric Modular Lounge with Electric Recliner

Modular with electric recliners

From $2,899

What drives the cost up?

  • Number of modules: Additional units mean additional frames, springs, foam and fabric.

  • Technology: Manual recliners are more expensive than regular seats, and electrical units even more so.

  • Covering materials: Leather and faux-leather finishes tend to be more expensive than fabric.

  • Additional features: Each extra feature (cup holders, USB ports, LED lights, speakers) costs money.

  • Quality: Construction materials such as frames, spring assembly, and filling differ among ranges.

Affordable modular sofa options under $2,000

Modular sofas below $2,000 are primarily smaller layouts or starter sets. Starter sets begin at approximately $1,000, while the larger corner layouts come in above that price point on the lower end of the scale. Additional pieces or options like reclining seats will cost you just above the $2,000 mark. The starter set is a good choice if you want the benefits of a modular sofa without the unnecessary pieces.

Modular or fixed corner sofa: which suits you?

A fixed corner sofa will be less expensive for the same seating capacity and more sturdy since the pieces remain joined. Modular is the way to go if you are renting, relocating frequently, or intend to change the arrangement later. For a more detailed comparison, see our piece about L-shaped lounges vs sofas.

Select a fixed corner or chaise if you are outfitting one room that you will not be moving out of and are after maximum seating capacity per cost.

Select modular if you are relocating or renting, require components that can fit through a small stairway or elevator, or want to break it down to a sofa and chairs in the future. Look into how the modules interlock, as clips and brackets prevent the pieces from coming apart. Read our post on the advantages of modular furniture for more details.

What is the best modular sofa in Australia? How to judge for yourself

No sofa is better than another. The best modular sofa will depend on your space, your price range, and the way your family uses it. To be able to choose from any modular sofa from our collection or others, consider the following:

  • Frame construction

  • Support system under seats – springs, webbing, or both

  • Interconnectivity of modules, as well as the ability to order additional modules in the future

  • Warranty on the frame and separately on the foam and fabric

Which corner sofa suits your household?

Choose your lounge to suit your lifestyle rather than only focusing on the price.

  • For a family of four or five: Go for a five-seater corner lounge in fabric that is easily cleaned.

  • For a small apartment or first rental: The chaise lounge is perfect for creating an L shape lounge at a lower price and taking up less floor space compared to a full corner lounge.

  • For overnight guests: Select for a couch with a built-in bed.

  • For movie sessions: Go for a chaise lounge with a recliner.

Before you pay: measure, check and read the fine print

  1. Measure the room and access point: Corner lounges typically measure between 250 and 320 cm in length, with a chaise measuring between 150 and 200 cm deep. All doorways, lifts, staircases, and corridors need to be measured as well, because a lounge that will not fit will not be eligible for a refund. Our size selection guide can help you choose.
  2. Determine the orientation of the chaise: LHF stands for left-hand facing, while RHF refers to right-hand facing, based on how you view the sofa. A reversible chaise gets rid of this problem.
  3. Find out whether it is in stock or needs to be preordered: Preorders always show the estimated date of availability, and cancellation results in a fee of at least 50% of the order price.
  4. Read the warranty and return policy: All of our lounges come with a 5-year warranty for the frame and 1 year for foam, springs, fabric, stitching, and mechanical/electrical components, unless stated otherwise. No refunds are provided for change of mind or incorrect selection, so select your lounge carefully.

Frequently asked questions

What's a realistic budget for a good corner sofa?
A good-quality fabric corner lounge costs around $1,500-$2,000. If it is less than $1,000, then it would mostly be a chaise lounge or sofa bed.

Modular or fixed corner sofa?

A fixed corner works for one room that you will never change. On the other hand, a modular is perfect for people who move around a lot.

Can I get next day delivery in Sydney?
We cannot promise it. Delivery times for most capital city orders are 1 to 3 days, so keep this in mind if you have a deadline.

Can I pay it off?
Of course! You can pay with Afterpay, Zip or Humm, or choose to put the selected products on lay-by with a deposit of 25% within 90 days of purchase.
